Populist attitudes and politicians’ disinformation accusations: effects on perceptions of media and politicians

Abstract Populist politicians increasingly accuse opposing media of spreading disinformation or “fake news.” However, empirical research on the effects these accusations is scarce. This survey experiment (N = 1,330) shows that reduce audience members’ trust in accused news outlet and perceived accuracy message, while accusing politician largely unaffected. only individuals with strong populist attitudes generalize to as an institution their general trust. The phrase news” does not amplify any effects. These findings suggest can undermine credibility journalism without much repercussion—a mechanism might also threaten other authoritative information sources democracies such scientists health authorities.
